James Shoolbred Drayton papers, 1837-1867.

Papers consist of correspondence and other items. Correspondence (1844-1864) includes letters from Thomas Frean and J.A. Leland, Superintendent of Public Works (Columbia, S.C.?), concerning Drayton's attempts to obtain payment for his services as a surveyor; a love letter (1854) to "Charlotte"; a letter (1863) from George H. Bright negotiating the hire of Isaac, a servant of James S. Drayton; and a letter (1867) to James S. Drayton from his nephew Conrad Wienges in Charleston (S.C.) regarding family and affairs, storm damage to buildings in Charleston, and the flying of the U.S. flag in the city. Other items include James S. Drayton's diploma (1837) from Rensselaer Institute (Troy, N.Y.) granting a degree in natural science; an officer's commission in the Fourth Brigade of the South Carolina Militia; a list of slaves (1860) given cloth and blankets at Drayton Hall; and a conveyance (1856) of a house in Charleston (S.C.) and a group of slaves (listed by name) to James S. Drayton from the estate of his mother Mary Middleton Shoolbred Drayton.

Surveyor. The son of Dr. Charles Drayton (1785-1844) and Mary Middleton Shoolbred (1794-1855), and grandson of Charles Drayton (1743-1820) of Drayton Hall, James Shoolbred Drayton was born on Jehosse Island (Charleston County, S.C.) in 1820 and married Louisa Eleanor Elford (d. 1851) in 1844.
